Introduced to Europe by plant hunter Robert Fortune from China in 1846, specimens were forwarded to the United States by 1858. Until 1890 it was a specimen plant cherished for its ornamental qualities.  Since the trees rarely exceeded 10 feet in height it was an ideal solarium plant for Gilded Age collectors of exotic fruits and tropical plants.…
